On the 19th November, 78 years ago, the great Polish Jewish writer, artist and translator Bruno Schulz was murdered in his home town of Drohobych, by a Gestapo officer, whilst walking home carrying a loaf of bread. Schulz' work is deeply mysterious, deeply troubling and unfathomably beautiful. To celebrate and commemorate his short life and his work, Vera Baxter have collaborated with the Polish artist
Jacek Smolicki who has been recording a minute of sound every day since July 2010. For this composition he used one minute from November 19th last year and one minute from July 12th (Schulz' birthday). The sound will play as you scroll down the text.
